#RIP Etta James, Johnny Otis, Winston Riley

We lost some legendary mofos last week within a few days of each other, so wanted to post some favorites.

Wikis on each one: Etta James, Johnny Otis and Winston Riley, though Winston’s is def lacking (come on ppl) so check this as well…

and of course we have the music, which is always better actually heard rather then described.

–>Etta James<-- good rockin' daddy (an early hit when she was in her teens...) In the basement w/ Sugarpie Desanto. also Theo Parrish has a nice slightly house-y edit of this track via Ugly Edits #9 worth checking. of course the classic Tell Mama I'd Rather Go Blind. c'mon ppl lets peer a little deeper beyond wedding standards like 'At Last'. -->Johnny Otis<-- doin' the watts...breakaway mega classic Hand Jive, live on his tv show from the 50s! Preston Love from his legendary Omaha BBQ rekkid from '69. Medium-rare funk grail. Produced by Johnny Otis who plays vibes and his son Shuggie (of Strawberry Letter 23 fame) on guitar, shredding at 14 years old! old school. shellac son! Bill Doggett on piano. -->Winston Riley<-- Sister Nancy uber classic on the Stalag riddim. The Stalag riddim was originally cut in the early 70s, this is from the early 80s. One of Riley's and Jamaica's most famous riddims of all time, been sampled and relicked by everyone, named after a 50s war film 'Stalag 17‘.

Also on Stalag, same time period, another uber classic. Tenor Saw is one of my favorite of all times all genres, also #RIP, killed in ’88 at only 22 years old by a speeding car in Houston TX. Tragic loss, a true legend w/o a doubt.

Supercat! One of his early hits. Boops riddim was based on the Ethiopians ‘Train to Skaville’ and Toots and the Maytals ’54-46′ (I’ll post in another entry). Relicked a zillion times.

early Winston Riley production, skinhead reggae favorite…”I am the magnificent!”

Nate Dogg – Gangsta Walk (Chong X – Gangstatone edit)

Latin Fresh – Ella se Arrebata (Chong X RMX)

#YoutubeDivas

my man my mellow Geko Jones is one of the folks behind the classic Que Bajo party and also down with Dutty Artz.

Recently via Tweakerville he started a #YoutubeDivas thread to give a shout to women in the music biz: “I’ve been hearing from a lot of my homegirls how they feel under-represented in the scene and I think it makes sense that we work together to get the word out.” You can follow him under @gekojones

I partcipated and sent a bunch of links yesterday, but after reading DJ /Rupture’s eggzellent post (and czeck his blarrg Mud Up), I was like, duh! I should share them here. Shouts to Geko for a great idear.
